MedEd Pesticide for Clinicians
MedEd Pesticide lists the contacts and reporting routes that clinicians need after a pesticide exposure.
MedEd Pesticide Lists Emergency Contacts for Pesticide Poisoning
In the United States, call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222 after a suspected poisoning. Call 911 if the person has collapsed, has a seizure or cannot breathe. EPA also advises anyone with current symptoms to go to the nearest emergency room.
MedEd Pesticide Points Clinicians to NPIC for Non-Emergency Questions
The National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) answers pesticide questions at 1-800-858-7378 and npic@oregonstate.edu. NPIC has a medical toxicologist who consults with physicians on non-emergency exposure cases. NPIC lists weekday morning hours in Pacific Time, so check its website before calling.
MedEd Pesticide Explains Where to Report Pesticide Illness
Pesticide-related illness is a reportable condition in several states, and the rules vary. Clinicians should ask their state health department which requirements apply. EPA lists these ways to report an incident:
- State pesticide regulatory agency: for suspected illegal use or misuse.
- Product manufacturer: the label lists the contact, and the manufacturer must report adverse effects to EPA.
- EPA: by email, with the product name, EPA registration number, location, date and a description.
- Local OSHA office: for workplace exposures.
- NPIC: for guidance on reporting.
MedEd Pesticide Notes a Clinical Reference From EPA
EPA points clinicians to a manual: Recognition and Management of Pesticide Poisonings, 6th edition. It serves as a quick reference on toxicology and treatment.
